Success for life: get the right support to achieve your true potential

Is a coach, a mentor, or a therapist the right person to help you unlock that next-level self?

When you're looking to make significant life changes, build confidence and create that next level success, it can be hard to know where to turn.

And the multitude of options out there doesn't make that any easier!

  • Executive coaching

  • Professional coaching

  • Business coaching

  • Relationship coaching

  • Life coaching

  • Mentoring

  • Therapy

  • Counselling...

... just to name a few of the services available for those looking to better their lives in 2024.

With so many labels and so much variation; the world of self-development can be baffling at times - even to established coaches and therapists!

There are so many potential avenues to explore, that you could be forgiven for deciding it's just easier to get your head down, go it alone and keep on pushing forward without any help.

Many people do - and in many ways, there's nothing wrong with that approach at all. You know you and your dreams better than anyone else, right?

But along the road to success, most people hit a wall at some point.

An impasse. A plateau. A phase where - for some reason - we just don't seem to be able to move forward. Or maybe we do... but for every step forward, something else starts falling apart.

And it's at that stage where the right professional support can make ALL the difference.

In fact, accessing the right support even earlier in your journey can prevent you from ever even hitting that wall in the first place - because getting the right help in the early days can help you smooth our the bumps in the road and see your blind spots before they even become an issue.

The truth is, most people who've created lasting success - well, they'll have had some help along the way. They may not always shout about it! But behind many a successful business leader, CEO, founder or professional, there's someone who's been quietly holding their hand in the background, nudging them forward and helping them create the kind of success that, to the outside world, seems to look so impossible - yet to have come so easily.

We've written this blog to help you understand why that is - and by the end of it, hopefully you'll have a great idea of the support that's available and what's best suited to where you're at, wherever that is, right now.

Understanding the difference: coaching, mentoring & therapy

First up, let's try and clarify the real differences between coaching, mentoring and therapy.

In today's fast-paced world, more professionals are seeking guidance to help them reach their goals and maximize their potential. Coaching, mentoring, and therapy are three powerful tools often used to navigate personal and professional development. However there are some confused and outdated ideas around how they work and what these terms mean.

That isn't always helped by the fact that these approaches can sometimes overlap - however at their core, they are distinctly different in purpose, method, and focus.

Understanding these differences - and knowing when therapy might be more appropriate than coaching - can be crucial to achieving success and well-being.

But before we get there - let's look at mentoring.

What is mentoring?

Mentoring involves a more experienced individual (the mentor) guiding a less experienced person (the mentee). This relationship often focuses on the professional or personal development of the mentee by sharing knowledge, offering advice, and providing encouragement based on the mentor's own experiences.

Mentors do not have to have any formal training or qualifications - though some may have chosen to become accredited - but they are generally very well-versed and experienced in their own industry or area of expertise, so can offer their experience to guide and provide insight for others following a similar path.

Key Aspects of Mentoring:

  • Mentoring Usually Means a Long-Term Relationship: Mentoring tends to be more informal and long-term, allowing the mentor to provide ongoing support and advice.

  • Mentoring is About Sharing Knowledge and Experience: Mentors provide insights and knowledge based on their own personal or professional experiences.

  • Mentoring Can Be Great for Career or Business Development: Mentoring often focuses on broader development, such as navigating workplace dynamics, building a network, or planning for future growth.

  • A Mentor Can Provide an Emotional Sounding Board: While not the focus, mentors often provide emotional encouragement as part of the relationship - however unless they have the relevant psychological training, they might not be best placed to really help you overcome any emotional hurdles.

What is coaching?

Coaching is a goal-oriented process, designed to help individuals identify and overcome obstacles, build new skills, and enhance performance in specific areas.

A coach works collaboratively with the individual to set clear, actionable goals and helps them stay accountable throughout the process. In pure coaching, this is all about using the individual's inner resources and knowledge, rather than the coach bringing their own experience in to the discussion - however many coaches will also bring in an element of mentoring where it's appropriate, beneficial to their client and done in keeping with coaching principles (i.e. the process should be client-led, not coach-determined).

Coaching tends to focus on the present and future, finding solutions and inspiring insight, rather than delving deeply into past experiences. Currently there is no requirement for a coach to be qualified in the UK, however many coaches will seek formal training and subscribe to a voluntary regulatory organisation such as the ICF or AFC (two recognised regulatory bodies for UK-based coaches).

Key Aspects of Coaching:

  • Coaching is Goal-Focused: Coaching aims to help you achieve specific goals, such as improving leadership skills, boosting productivity, or balancing work and life.

  • Coaching Outcomes are Action-Oriented: Coaches provide strategies and action plans to help you achieve measurable outcomes.

  • Coaching Often Focuses on Performance Enhancement: Coaches help clients develop skills, break habits, or make shifts in mindset that lead to better performance.

  • A Coaching Relationship is Often Short-Term: Coaching engagements typically last for a specific period (e.g., 3-6 months), focusing on practical outcomes, although some people choose to have a much longer coaching relationship.

  • A Coach Can Help With Resilience & Emotional Growth: Coaching can be very valuable in helping build confidence and coping strategies - however coaches are not trained or qualified to deal with trauma or deeper psychological wellbeing issues.

A trauma-informed* coach will understand trauma, how it can negatively impact individuals and the impact it can have on their work with a client - but they are not able to treat or manage trauma.

What is therapy?

Therapy, or psychotherapy, is a professional service focused on emotional well-being and mental health. Therapists can help individuals explore or process past experiences, manage or resolve trauma, understand emotions and behaviors, and manage mental health conditions.

Unlike coaching and mentoring, therapy delves into the underlying psychological patterns that may be holding someone back from achieving their goals and can help the individual resolve some of the fundamental subconscious limitations that may be standing in their way.

Again there is currently no formalised system of qualification or registration for therapists practicing in the UK. Regulation relies on voluntary registration with the relevant bodies by the practising therapist, which usually entails regular CPD and supervision and an agreement to abide by the relevant code of ethics and conduct.

Key Aspects of Therapy:

  • Therapy Puts Mental Health & Wellbeing First: Addressing emotional and psychological well-being, helping individuals manage issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress, helping them resolve resultant unwanted emotional and behavioural patterns - and putting the individual back in control of their thoughts, agency and direction.

  • Therapy is Insight-Oriented: Therapy often involves exploring or processing past experiences to understand and resolve current behaviors and emotions which may be sabotaging progress - however some modalities, such as IEMT, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, are designed to place very little emphasis on past experiences whilst 'rewiring' the brain to overcome trauma and work towards positive outcomes and goals.

  • Therapy Focuses on Healing and Growth: Therapy is not just about achieving specific goals; it is also about personal healing, emotional growth, and overcoming psychological barriers to long-term success and self-belief.

  • The Impact of Therapy is Usually Long-Term: A course of therapy in itself can be shorter-term or longer-term, depending on the modality and complexity of the issues being addressed - but the results should be lasting.

Our goal at The Better Brain Company is to help clients achieve their desired outcomes as quickly, painlessly and effectively as possible, so they can move on with their lives without needing to be 'in therapy' forever!

Deciding Between Therapy and Coaching

When to Consider Therapy Over Coaching

For many professionals, coaching or mentoring is enough to help them achieve specific goals - whether it’s boosting performance, developing new skills, or navigating specific personal or professional challenges.

However, there are times when therapy is more appropriate—and even essential—if deeper psychological or emotional issues are impacting your ability to move forward. Let's explore the times when therapy might be your better bet:

1. When Emotional or Mental Health Issues Are Present

If you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, burnout, or stress that affect your daily life and work, therapy is the right course of action. Coaches are not equipped to handle mental health conditions; therapists are trained professionals who can help you address these issues at their root.

Moreover, you will get much more out of a course of coaching once you've worked through any underlying emotional issues - think of therapy as removing an invisible ceiling, so you'll not only be more receptive to any coaching you have, but you'll be able to implement anything your coach recommends much more quickly and effectively.

2. When Past Trauma or Emotional Baggage is Holding You Back

If you find that unresolved emotional trauma or patterns from the past are affecting your ability to perform or thrive, therapy offers a safe space to explore and heal those wounds.

These underlying issues often require professional intervention that coaching or mentoring alone cannot provide - for example, we've often helped clients resolve performance anxiety when a heightened physiological 'fight or flight' response has stopped them from being able to perform as their coach or mentor has recommended. Dealing with the underlying trauma and helping the brain and nervous system feel 'safe' can make all the difference.

3. When Personal Issues Interfere with Professional Goals

Therapy is often necessary when personal life challenges - such as relationship problems, family issues, or self-esteem concerns - are interfering with your professional goals.

A therapist can help you manage these personal challenges and build confidence, self-esteem and coping skills in all areas of life, providing the emotional clarity and resilience needed to achieve success.

4. When You Feel “Stuck” Despite Coaching or Mentoring

If you’ve been working with a coach or mentor but still feel stuck, unable to move forward despite practical advice and action plans, therapy may be necessary to uncover deeper psychological barriers.

Therapy can help you identify and resolve hidden limiting beliefs, self-sabotaging behaviors, underlying fears or deep-rooted identity issues that are keeping you from reaching your potential.

Combining Coaching and Therapy

In some cases, professionals can benefit from both coaching and therapy simultaneously.

For example, a coach might help you set and work towards clear business or career goals, while a therapist supports your emotional well-being and helps you work through personal challenges and limiting subconscious beliefs.

Combining the two can lead to holistic growth - addressing both the mental blocks and practical steps needed for success.

We work alongside Executive and Professional Coaches in our sister company, Inspired Minds, to provide deeper emotional & psychological support and trauma resolution to deepen the impact of coaching and allow our associates to coach more effectively.

Final Thoughts

Coaching, mentoring and therapy all play important roles in personal and professional development, but they serve very different purposes.

If you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, it’s important to recognize when deeper emotional support is needed to break through barriers or help you see beyond your currently perceived limitations.

Therapy provides a space to heal and grow, empowering you to take on life’s challenges with a clearer mind and stronger emotional foundation - and can provide a powerful untapped layer of exploration for those seeking the deepest level of personal development.

By understanding the difference between therapy, coaching and mentoring, you can make informed choices about the kind of support you need to hit your goals while maintaining your mental health and well-being, and ensure that you’re taking the right steps to reach your full potential both personally and professionally.
